Virginia Department of Taxation Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced that the Virginia Department of Taxation has issued nearly 100 percent of state income tax refunds, putting money in the pockets of Virginians as the state continues to emerge from economic challenges. Virginians have received more than 2.6 million refunds, totaling more than $1.6 billion. Virginia’s emphasis on electronic filing has also made processing the tremendous volume of returns much simpler, allowing for quicker issuance of refunds. Approximately 63 percent of returns were filed electronically, compared to 56 percent in 2008. This has allowed the Department of Taxation to issue 82 percent of refunds within 12 days, and 96 percent within 30 days. |

NC Tri-County Municipal Election Filing Period The filing period for candidates for the upcoming municipal offices in the tri-county area will begin at 8:30a.m. Monday and end at noon July 17. Candidates should file at their respective county Board of Elections’ locations. The elections are non-partisan and with the exception of Henderson’s October 6 election date; all other municipal elections will occur on November 3. |

Stimulus Funding To Virginia Community Health Centers Subtantial funding has been announced for 24 community health centers in Virginia to maintain facilities and improve services. Among the two dozen recipients of grant funding is Southern Dominion Health Systems, Inc. of Victoria which is set to receive $705,700 in stimulus aid. |

Oxford Police Chief John Wolford Urges Caution A fox that had attacked a neighborhood dog and aggressively approached a citizen in Oxford Tuesday afternoon was killed by the citizen. Oxford Police directed the owner of the dog to take it to the vet immediately, where the dog is being quarantined pending results of rabies testing. The fox carcass was seized by Animal Control for rabies testing. Chief John Wolford urges area residents to be on the lookout for any unusual animal sightings (ie: fox, raccoons or other animals) not normally seen in the daytime that are acting strangely, approaching dogs, people or nearby residences. Get to shelter and call 911. |

Virginia Department of Forestry Virginia Forestry officials are urging caution when handling fireworks and sparklers this Fourth of July. Officials report that a lack of significant rainfall in some portions of the state have fostered dry grass and trees that could easily ignite from just a single spark. Officials are urging anyone handling fireworks to keep buckets of water, wet towels and a garden hose close at hand. |

Person County Schools Say "No" To Cell Phones The Person County Board of Education adopted a revised policy on the use of wireless communication devices in schools during their Tuesday meeting. According to the new policy “students are permitted to possess wireless communication devices on school property as long as such devices remain in an “off” mode, are not activated, used, displayed or visible during the instructional day or as otherwise directed by local school rules or school personnel.” According to the new policy, use of these devices is prohibited on school buses and using them to take photographs is prohibited at all times while on school property or on school buses. |

Halifax County Blood Drives The Halifax/ Charlotte County Chapters of the American Red Cross will be conducting blood drives next week in our area. On Monday, July 6th they will be set up at the American Legion post 8 in South Boston from 1-7pm and on Tuesday, July 7th they will be at the Mary Bethune Complex from 12-6pm. |
